My Story
There’s nothing more shocking than receiving a phone call that a family member is badly ill – in a foreign country. That’s what happened to me – and not just once, but twice. While on an extended assignment in Yemen, my father was diagnosed with a severe lung infection. Of course I immediately flew to be with him and help make arrangements while he was hospitalized. When he was released from the hospital a week later, we thought all was well. I came home, planning to return in 10 days to accompany him back to the U.S.
When I landed in New York, I learned my father had been rushed back to the hospital with a heart attack and kidney failure. He was in the ICU and needed to see me there when he opened is eyes. So, within 24 hours, I As there is a serious shortage of doctors in Yemen, my father remaining there was not an option. Unfortunately, he could not fly on a commercial airline as his condition was unstable and there was potential for him to have another heart attack at anytime. Therefore, I had to arrange an alternative way to evacuate him to Germany, the nearest country with medical services I felt we could trust.
I had to research and schedule the air ambulance, understand the insurance requirements, make arrange- ments for funds to cover what the insurance wouldn’t, pull together doctors’ reports for insurance and for the destination hospital in Germany, coordinate with the flight doctor, clear payments for the Yemini doctors and hospital … and all of this while managing language and cultural barriers, not to mention my deep anxiety about my father. If you’ve ever had to deal with the serious illness of a close friend or relative, you know what it feels like.
Imagine how you’d feel if it were all happening in a foreign country – a foreign country where you didn’t know the language, and didn’t have faith in the medical system. As I went through this experience, I badly wished there was a support system in place to rely upon. Having someone who knows what to do in a situation like this is more than just support and peace of mind in a time of severe stress. In some emergency situations, it’s potentially life-saving. Because of my experience, IKG Global now offers Medical Assistance Services to our clients. Thankfully, all arrangements were made on time and my Dad was flown to Frankfurt, Germany. His condition was stabilized, and he flew back to Washington DC on a commercial flight. He’s on dialysis now and is out of danger.
